Aujourd’hui, Maman, c’est mon anniversaire. J’ai 35 ans, et pour fêter ça je réalise un rêve : visiter Ellis Island. Alors que je devrais être heureuse, le cafard me prend en pensant à toi, morte il y a dix ans sans avoir jamais eu la chance de venir ici.

Je repense aussi à cette vieille légende familiale : ton grand-père, arrivé en Belgique en 1948 depuis l’Italie, aurait eu deux frères partis du même village, l’un vers l’Argentine, l’autre vers New York. Trois frères, dans trois directions différentes.

Tu ne m’as pratiquement rien laissé de notre histoire belgo-italienne. Tu es morte, mes grands-parents sont morts, et bientôt toute notre histoire disparaîtra.

Alors, avec Guillaume, on prend la route depuis La Louvière vers ton village en Italie, avant de traverser l’Atlantique, pour démêler le vrai du mythe et répondre à cette question que tu t’es toujours posée : avons-nous de la famille de l’autre côté du monde, nous les “biesses” immigrés de Wallonie ?

Dans un an, j’aurai toutes les réponses. Ce voyage, je le fais pour toi.

Today, Mom, it’s my birthday. I’m 35, and to celebrate it I’m making a dream come true: visiting Ellis Island. When I should be happy, a feeling of gloom comes over me as I think of you, who died ten years ago without ever having had the chance to come here.

I also think about that old family legend: your grandfather, who arrived in Belgium from Italy in 1948, is said to have had two brothers who left the same village, one for Argentina, the other for New York. Three brothers, in three different directions.

You left me almost nothing of our Belgian-Italian history. You died, my grandparents died, and soon our entire history will disappear.

So, with Guillaume, we take the road from La Louvière to your village in Italy, before crossing the Atlantic, to untangle truth from myth and answer the question you always asked yourself: do we have family on the other side of the world, we, the « insignificant » immigrants of Wallonia?

In a year, I will have all the answers. This journey, I’m doing it for you.
